How it Started…

Dr. Norman Lassiter was instrumental in establishing the Old Dominion Dental Society in 1913. Dr. Lassiter along with other African American Dentists met at the We-US Hotel in Newport News, Virginia and officers were elected. Dr. Norman Lassiter was the first president of this society. Dr. Lassiter opened his dental practice in 1909. He fought for better housing for African American in his community. He often held meetings at his home and raised funds for housing. Due to Dr. Lassiter’s efforts for better housing, African American citizens were able to move in neighborhoods that were previously denied to them. Dr. Lassiter died suddenly on March 25, 1929. In 1947, the federal government along with the city of Newport News, Virginia honored Dr. Norman Lassiter by naming a new housing development after him calling it, “The Lassiter Court Apartments”.
