ODDS Local Components

The local components were named after admired African-American dental role models who made a great contribution to the dental profession as well as their surrounding communities.

The Old Dominion Dental Society consists of three local active dental components and two inactive components. The local components were named after admired African-American dental role models who made a great contribution to the dental profession as well as their surrounding communities. The local components divided the state of Virginia into three regions. Each component is unique and self-sustaining organizations that work independently and together for the cohesiveness of the ODDS. The Peter B. Ramsey Dental Society, encompassing the greater Richmond area and a significant portion of Petersburg and Hopewell, maintains a sizable active membership and is considered to be one of the largest components. The Norman Lassiter Dental Society, encompassing the city of Newport News and the surrounding areas of Hampton, Virginia, has the great distinction of their namesake being the first President of the Old Dominion Dental Society. The John McGriff Dental Society, encompassing the cities of Norfolk, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, had the honor of being host for the headquarters of the ODDS in the newly integrated Golden Triangle Hotel in Norfolk in 1962. The hotel later became noted as one of the hotels that held events for top Negro organizations.
