Peter B. Ramsey Component

The Peter B. Ramsey Dental Society meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of the month. The members reside in Richmond, Petersburg and Hopewell, Virginia.

How it Started…

January, 1917, the Peter B. Ramsey Dental Society in Richmond, Virginia was established.  The six members present were Drs. J. M. G. Ramsey, son of Peter B. Ramsey, O. R Johnson, Leon Reid, D. A. Ferguson, and two other area dentists.  Dr. O. R. Johnson was the first president.  Dr. Ferguson served as the fires president of the National Dental Association.  Dr. J. M. G. Ramsey became Richmond’s most outstanding dentist and was very active in civic affairs.  Dr. Ramsey was instrumental in the advancement of African Americans Boy youths.  He was awarded the “National Chief Boy Scot Silver Beaver Award” for his efforts.  Dr. Ramsey was an advisor to the Richmond School Board and was responsible for the establishment of the annual observance of Negro History Week.

Peter B. Ramsey was born in Petersburg, Virginia and later moved to Richmond, Virginia.  He attended Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, Nashville, Tennessee.  He opened his dental practice in the year of 1888 on Leigh Street.  Dr. Ramsey was the first African American dentist to practice in the State of Virginia.

The Peter B. Ramsey Dental Society continues to have extraordinary individuals as its members.
